AdminHistory | The larger part of the material originates from the firm of Bourne and Morton (previously James Bourne, James Bourne and Son, Bourne and Wainwright, Bourne and Owen etc.), predecessors of Slater and Camm as stewards of the manors of the Earls of Dudley, to whose practice Slater and Camm succeeded on the death of Morton (by then the sole partner) in 1917.
The second source is William Fellows alias Fellowes, later Fellowes, Coldicott and Canning, then Coldicott and Canning, and Coldicott, Canning and Coldicott, before becoming Coldicott and Son, then Coldicott, Slater and Camm (Slater and Camm purchased the Coldicott business in 1906, following the death of Henry Coldicott in autumn 1905; Henry S. Coldicott was in practice in London with Coldicott and Bowden). For a short period the firm was Stanier Jones, Slater and Camm, before settling to its final title.
Manorial court records received from Slater and Camm (Accessions 815-849, 851-852) are now in the Dudley Estate archive (Ref: DE) but 'Copyhold Letter Books' have been retained with some other letter books of Slater and Camm/Bourne and Morton etc.
Camm served his articles with Slater and Company of Darlaston and there was an overlap of personnel between that firm and Slater and Camm. Furthermore, the Whitefoords, kindred of the Slaters, used both firms (or their Slater partners) indifferently. |
