TitleLicence to use Patent for the Purification of Gas by the Town of Dudley Gas Light Company

1. Frederick Owen Patch of Tiverton, Devon, Gentleman; Henry Phillips of the City of Exeter, Chymist; Ann Phillips of Exeter, Widow.
2. Arthur Stowe Holdsworth of Dartmouth, Devon, Esq.
3. The Town of Dudley Gas Light Company.
Reuben Phillips of Exeter held a Patent for 'a new and improved method of purifying Gas for the purpose of Illumination'. Reuben Phillips died on 13th October 1828, and appointed his brother in law, Frederick Owen Patch; his brother Henry Phillips; and his wife, Ann Phillips, as his Executors.
#3 paid to #1 the sum of £60 for having used and enjoyed the invention of Reuben Phillips without acknowledgement being paid to the Executors. Therefore, #1 grants to #3 the right and licence to use the invention for the purpose of illumination of the town of Dudley. Attached is a receipt for the amount of £5 5s from Dudley Gas Light Company, paid for charges relating to preparing the licence, dated 15th May 1830.
