AdminHistory | In 1879, the Bishop of Lichfield dedicated a sum of money for the purposes of maintaining a curate in the Black Country. West Coseley with Swan Village was identified as the benefactor of this, becoming a mission district. The parish of St. Chad itself was founded three years later following a gift of land by the Earl of Dudley with £1000 towards the cost of building a new church on the site. The foundation stone was laid in 1882 and St. Chad's became a separate parish two years later, in 1884, being formed out of the parishes of All Saints, Sedgley and Christ Church, Coseley. (LD 283)
Initially referred to as the 'Parish of Saint Chad, West Coseley', it was not until 1956 that an order was passed to alter this to the current 'Parish of Saint Chad, Coseley' (PR5/2/2/3). A history of the church, 'St. Chad's Coseley - The First 100 Years', by Beryl Wilkes, is available in our Local Studies collection (LD 283).
Part of this catalogue was imported back from A2A in Feb 2007. On A2A the reference number used to be PR/COS(CH), this was changed slightly to PRCOS2 to suit CALM before being altered to PR5 when the collection was re-catalogued in 2010. A few of the individual document reference numbers have also slightly changed.
This collection has been arranged and catalogued in line with the Church of England New Model Classification scheme, to which a few minor alterations have been made to accommodate the collections held at Dudley Archives and Local History Service. A copy of this scheme can be found in the searchroom. The collection was catalogued in December 2010. The accession number for the records in the catalogue imported back from A2A is unknown, but assumed to be accession 8674. The additional records added to the catalogue in 2007 were deposited as accession 8950. |
