Description | Toc H has its beginnings in 1915, as a soldiers' club set up in Poperinghe in Belgium, in Talbot House, the initials of which became Toc H in army signallers' language. The house was named Talbot House as a tribute to Lieut. Gilbert Talbot who had been killed in action. The first warden was Rev. Philip (Tubby) Clayton, who revived the movement in 1919 in London. Toc H was never an ex-servicemen's association. Its aims were to revive the fellowship and common service of wartime, largely by helping those less fortunate in the community. The Netherton men's branch of the Toc H was formed in 1933, and was granted its Lamp of Maintenance, signifying its full branch status, in 1937. The group was disbanded in May 1998.
