Description | DSCAM/5/6/3/1: Probate (16 Oct. 1841) of the will (dated 18 Dec. 1840) of Benjamin Lay of Dudley, Worcs., maltster; executors, Thomas Lay, John Lay and Edward Lay (sons), Joseph Bridgwater (brother-in-law) and Maria Lay (widow); household stores to wife; household effects to wife for life; recites that he has made large advances to son Joseph Lay 'who has pursued a reckless course of conduct in spite of my remonstrances and on whose account I have incurred serious liabilities and sustained heavy losses to the injury of my other children and although I am induced to forgive him I have determined to take no notice of him in this will...'; all estate to wife for life; thence messuage in High Street with appurtenances extending to King Street, Dudley, to son Thomas, charged with £200 to daughter, Sarah Bridgwater, wife of Joseph, and £25 p.a. to daughter, Mary Higgs, wife of Solomon Higgs, and charged with £500 after the death of Mary (payable as to £200 to grand daughter, Maria Lay Broadhurst, £150 to grand daughter Ellen Catherine Broadhurst, and £150 to all the children of Mary and Solomon Higgs in equal shares); 2 messuages, malthouse etc. in King Street, Dudley, to sons John and Edward, as tenants in common; residue of real estate to all children except Joseph as tenants in common; £300 to daughter, Sarah Bridgwater, after wife's decease, payable from personal estate, and residue of presonal estate to all children except Joseph equally. |
