Description | DSCAM/5/6/1/1: Articles for a pre-nuptial settlement of Mary Dix and Read Shaw (7 Mar. 1742/43), made between Elizabeth Dix of Cradley, parish of Halesowen, Worcs., widow and Nicholas Hancox of Ravensitch, parish of Kingswinford, Staffs., scythesmith, Mary Dix of Cradley, spinster (daughter of Elizabeth), and Read Shaw of Stourbridge, Worcs., chirurgeon. £200 to be paid as Mary's portion; agreement by Elizabeth Dix, Nicholas Parker and Jane his wife, Philip Orton and Elizabeth his wife, and Phebe Dix, spinster (dau. of Elizabeth), to surrender 4 closes copyholds of the Manor of Halesowen, to the use of Read Shaw for life, then to Mary Dix for life, thence to their issue, with remainder to the right heirs of Read Shaw, or to sell the property and settle the proceeds thus; to settle on Hancox and James Shaw (brother of Read) a messuage and appurtenances at Stourbridge (occupied by Phebe Harman, widow), to the use of Read Shaw for life, etc., with remainder in default of issue to the heirs of Mary Dix; Shaw to settle on Hancox and James Shaw a messuage in High Street, Dudley occupied by Oliver Shaw, a malthouse, two cottages adjoining, a messuage on the other side of High Street, etc. (tenants given), to the use of Read Shaw for life, then to Mary for life, thence to their issue, with remainder to the heirs of Shaw; Shaw to purchase £100 of freehold lands, with the consent of Elizabeth Dix, and settle them upon the same trusts as the Dudley property. etc. |
DSCAM/5/6/1/2: Copy of the will (dated 1 Oct. 1739) of Daniel Shaw of Dudley, mercer; devises dwellinghouses occupied by Jonah Turner, late by Edward Hughes, Oliver Shaw [brother], Joseph Higgins, Philip Rogers, John Tomkiss and Joseph Roads, to son Read Shaw; and bequeaths him two beds, specified furniture, and books relating to surgery and physick and instruments of Read's late grandfather Adam Roads; tobacco engine to son Daniel Shaw; other household effects to daughter Frances Smith; Peacock Fields, Rushy Croft and Colepit Leasow in the parish of Dudley (abuttals given), to son James Shaw, charged with £50 to Read Shaw and £200 to son-in-law Joseph Smith under his marriage settlement; executor, James Shaw; 1749. |
DSCAM/5/6/1/3: Lease and release (13-14 Oct. 1774) being a pre-nuptial settlement of Henry Shaw and Ann Pargiter, between Read Shaw of Stourbridge, Worcs., surgeon, Henry Shaw of the same, surgeon (his only son, by Mary his late wife), Thomas Pargiter the elder of Cradley, Worcs., baker and Ann Pargiter (a daughter of Thomas); with Thomas Pargiter the younger (eldest son of Thomas) and James Hayward Shaw of Dudley, gentleman as trustees. £300 covenanted to be paid to Henry Shaw as the marriage portion and an annuity of £28 to be secured to Read Shaw; appointment and conveyance, pursuant to a Fine of the same, of 3 messuages and 3 cottages in High Street, Dudley (tenants given), to the trustees, to secure the annuity, and subject thereto, to such uses as Henry Shaw and his wife shall appoint, and otherwise to the use of Henry for life, then of Ann for life, thence to their children in such proportions and subject to such portions as they shall jointly appoint, or as Henry shall solely appoint should he survive Ann, etc., with remainder to Henry and his heirs. |
