TitleTHE DUDLEY ANNUITY SOCIETY
DescriptionThe Society was formed in 1792 and finall wound up in 1837. It had been seeking to liquidate itself since 1813 but the inability to realise its mortgage investment in Caponfield prevented this. Its purpose was to admit (by ballot) persons of 'good character and sound constitution' aged between 21 and 46 (in the first instance; reducing to 40 thereafter). Annuities were payable to members or their widows and benefits could be claimed after 4 years of membership. The problem of this and other similar societies was their faulty actuarial base.

James Bourne was active as a trustee (and legal adviser/law agent) from 1810 until his death in 1835, and Joseph Green Bourne, as his executor and successor to his legal practice, was involved from 1835 to 1837.
