AdminHistoryThe South Staffordshire & East Worcestershire Miners' Educational Sustenance Fund was set up under a Trust Deed dated 8th April 1940. The original Trustees were: William Fenn of Keresley, Coventry; George Vivian Perry of Tamworth-in-Arden; Leslie Gilbert Pitt of Bridgnorth; Josiah James of West Bromwich; Joseph Jones of 'Lower Gorner'; and William Samuel Greenway of Pensnett.

The Fund was established to support and enhance the social well-being, recreation and living conditions of workers in Coal Mines, and to encourage Mining education and research.

The aims of the Fund were:
- To provide scholarships, exhibitions and other educational facilities for the benefit of workers in or about coal mines in the District; and their wives and children.
- To provide any text and reference books, instruments, and apparatus required by the workers, wives or children for their education.
- To pay travelling and other expenses incurred by the worker or their wives and children for the above purposes.
- To reimburse loss of wages incurred by the workers in consequence of attending part-time day courses.
- To contribute towards the expense of holding classes or instructional courses in the District for the benefit of workers, wives or children.

The Fund later became known by the name of South Staffordshire and East Worcestershire Miners' Welfare Educational Sustenance Fund. By 1975, the assets of the Fund had been transferred to the Miners' Welfare National Education Fund.

The records in this collection were deposited at Dudley Archives & Local History Service as accession number 8693 and were catalogued as part of the 'Documenting the Workshop of the World' Project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, May 2005.
