Description | Letters between Cannon and the London & North Western Railway, District Estate Office, Birmingham. Re: several disputes, including: a dispute over fencing and extending the Railway bridge at Coseley; damage to the foundations of Coseley Hall by the Railway slope which was constructed after the house was built; emission of smoke from Railway engines, causing a nuisance to the Clayton family, inhabitants of Coseley Hall; etc. In a letter to the Railway Company from Richard Clayton, dated 14th August 1906, he states that 'the smoke is absolutely poisonous and is held in a close atmosphere for a long period. It permeates every room in my house and is doing damage in every possible way. In addition to this the annoyance is personally unendurable, particularly when the wind is in the east.' Coseley Hall is described, in a letter to the London & North Western Railway, dated 13th November 1899, as 'substantially built with splendid foundations and massive arch cellars'. |
