| Description | Correspondence re: the appeal by Round Oak Steel Works to allow their scrap stock to be piled higher than the Council regulations of 6 ft high. The file includes many letters from local residents objecting to the increased height of scrap. Objections included the noise of lorries and cranes at all hours, unsightly scrap piled high behind their gardens; and the rats which infested the scrap piles. An extract from a letter dated November 1974 reads: 'The fact that Round Oak Steel Works seem to have no respect at all for people who are forced, for one reason or another, to live all their lives under the ever increasing shadow of depressing views, dust and noise, tipping scrap metal is bad enough, but to extend this scrap yard by making it higher is an outrage. All we can see now from the rear of our property is pile upon pile of scrap, dirty cranes and lorries and the unbearable noise…all hours of the day and night (weekends included)…..Our social life is non-existant [sic] at the moment because we cannot allow children to play in our rear garden without an adult in attendance to safeguard the possibility of them finding the rat poison or being attacked by rats….The prospect of selling this property is virtually out of the question, the value has at least halved in the past twelve months.' Also includes a file of photographs of the scrap piles at the back of housing; and maps of the area.
