| Description | John Roper trained and worked as a solictor. He was involved in a number of local history organisations including the Friends of Ancient Staffordshire Churches, the William Salt Library at Stafford, Staffordshire Record Society and the Staffordshire Parish Register Society. Roper was a distinguished researcher and writer of transcripts and studies relating to Dudley as well as other areas in the Black Country. His publications include 'Dudley probate inventories 1544-1603; transcribed and edited by John S. Roper', 'Four early Vicars of Dudley' by John Roper' (1980), 'Pattingham Churchwardens accounts, 1583-1603 transribed by John S Roper'; ' Wolverhampton: trades and occupations from the town rate, 1792; edited by John S Roper', 'Pattingham constable accounts 1582 - 1603; transcribed by John S. Roper; 'Trades and professions in Wolverhampton, 1802: a Directory compiled from the 1802 rate book, by John S Roper'; 'Story of the Parish Church of St Thomas, Dudley. Revised by Mr John S Roper' (1979); 'Early Dudley Wills, 1540 - 1558'; several works on the town of Dudley over the ages and also several transcripts of records from the Dudley Archives.
