Description | John William, 1st Earl of Dudley held slave plantations at Whitney and Rymesbury in Clarendon and New Yarmouth in Vere in Jamaica (according to the Legacies of British Slave-ownership database, he inherited the Jamaican estates from his paternal grandmother Mary Carver) for which over £12,700 compensation was claimed in 1835 by the Estate Trustees under the Slavery Abolition Act 1833. The family continued to own land in Jamaica in the 20th century. |
